Big Walk Connection Errors & Join Code Fixes
Host loads first, versions match, code is fresh, clock is correct — then passwords, Mac App Store, and rejoin loops.
Most Big Walk “it won’t let me in” nights are the same four mistakes: the host has not finished loading the world, someone is on an old Join Code, the first two version numbers do not match, or a device clock is wrong. This page is the connection troubleshooting checklist for Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and the Mac App Store build — aligned with House House’s official FAQ and launch-week support patterns.
Start here when friends lists stay empty, Join Codes fail, or one player can neither host nor join. For platform matrices see Crossplay Platforms. For subscriptions see Online Requirements. For save ownership see Host Saves.
Golden loop (do this in order)
- Host fully loads the intended save until their character is in the world.
- Everyone checks the version on the main menu — only the first two numbers must match (example:
1.4.xcan mix patch digits). - Host opens Session Details (or the host menu corner before start) and copies a fresh Join Code.
- Guests join with that code or the same-platform friends list.
- If one device cannot host or join any session, sync the system clock and fully restart Big Walk.
If that loop fails, keep reading — do not regenerate codes ten times while the host is still on the title screen.
Join Codes vs friends lists
| Method | When to use |
|---|---|
| Platform friends list | Same network (Steam, PSN, or Nintendo) and the host appears as online in-game |
| Join Code | Crossplay, missing friends link, Mac App Store, or the friends list is empty |
| Password | Streaming, large friend graphs, or you want only invited players |
Join Codes are session keys, not promo codes. A new code generates every time the host starts a session. Yesterday’s code is dead. Type carefully; strip chat spaces if paste fails.
Mac App Store: that build does not support Game Center friends lists. Those players must use a Join Code.
Where hosts find the code and password
- Before start: Join Code appears in the corner of the host menu.
- After start: open the in-game menu → Session Details for the current code.
- Passwords can be set or changed while the game is running from Session Details.
- Anyone who knows the code can join unless a password blocks them. Do not show live codes or passwords on stream overlays.
Symptom → fix table
| Symptom | Likely fix |
|---|---|
| Friend missing from list | Add platform friends; or use Join Code; Mac App Store → code only |
| Code rejected / fails | Host already in world? Fresh code? Typo? Crossplay on? |
| Cannot join or host at all | Sync system date/time/timezone; restart the game |
| One platform blocked | PS Plus / Switch Online active? Mic privacy unrelated — online sub is |
| Everyone desyncs / jitter | Host FPS and bandwidth — lower host graphics, wired Ethernet |
| Voices double / echo | Speaker feedback loop — headphones; mute test per Proximity Chat |
| Quiet voices after join | Update to 1.4.8+ — Version 1.4.8 |
| PS5 mute | PS Button → Sound → turn off Mute Game Voice Chat |
Version matching rules
A Big Walk version looks like 1.2.3. Official rule: only the first two numbers need to match for play. The third digit can differ. Still, after a major voice or networking hotfix, get everyone onto the newest build you can — Steam often leads consoles by hours or days.
Clock sync (the silent blocker)
If a device’s clock drifts far from real time, Big Walk can refuse both hosting and joining. Fix OS automatic time, confirm timezone, then relaunch. This catches “nothing works on my laptop” reports that look like network failure.
Rejoining after a disconnect
- Host stays in the world if possible.
- Disconnected player uses the current Join Code or friends list — not an old chat pin.
- If the host restarted, wait for a new code.
- Meet at the last flare / Map Room rather than assuming inventory positions.
Progress remains on the host save. Guests do not “bring” the world with them — Host Saves.
World size choice when hosting
When the host starts a session they pick a 2 player, 3 player, or 4+ player version of the world. Treat that as the minimum expected group, not a hard maximum. If friends will drop mid-evening, pick a lower configuration. Details: Party Size.
When to contact support
If the golden loop fails across multiple networks, gather: platforms and store editions, exact versions, who hosted, exact error text, local date/time/timezone, whether friends list or code was used, and whether one player or everyone failed. Redact live Join Codes and passwords. Email [email protected] (official FAQ contact).

Most launch-week timeouts die to the short loop: host loaded, versions aligned, code fresh, clock correct. Run that before blaming crossplay.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Big Walk questions.
Why does my Join Code fail?
Usually the host is not fully in the world yet, the code is from an old session, or there is a typo. Generate a fresh code after the host loads in.
Do all three version numbers need to match?
No. Only the first two numbers must match. The third digit can differ.
Why can I neither host nor join?
Sync your device system clock and timezone, then fully restart Big Walk. Large clock drift blocks sessions.
Does the Mac App Store build show friends games?
No. Mac App Store players should use a Join Code every time.
Can I change the password mid-session?
Yes. Open the in-game menu → Session Details to change it while the game is running.
