Big Walk Backpacks & Waist Bags

How inventory really works — teammates dress you, bags hold the gadgets, and blue buildings hide the gear.

Backpacks & Waist Bags

Big Walk’s inventory is a social mechanic dressed as camping gear. You cannot casually open a menu and stash twelve lasers. Backpacks and waist bags expand what your party can carry, but another player must equip and access them for you. That design choice turns every gourd run and tool swap into a tiny co-op puzzle. This guide explains bag types, where to find them, how to use them without rage-quitting, and how they connect to tower progression.

Read the Tools Hub for the gadget roster, Tower Order for why carrying two red gourds matters, and Party Prep Planner before a large lobby night.

Backpack versus waist bag

Bag typeTypical capacityBest for
BackpackOne item of nearly any sizeLarge tools, puzzle props, red gourds
Waist bag / side satchelSmaller items onlyCompact gadgets, spare signals

Hands still hold one active tool. Bags are overflow, not a second HUD inventory. Items stowed in bags tend to stay safer when someone tumbles off a ledge than items clutched in open hands — useful when your friend is both clumsy and essential.

You cannot dress yourself

The rule that surprises every new lobby:

  • A teammate must put a backpack or waist bag on you.
  • A teammate must open that bag to stow or retrieve your item.
  • You generally cannot self-manage the pack on your own back.

Treat inventory like a buddy-check before scuba diving. Agree who is the packer for each subgroup. In duos, you dress each other constantly. In twelve-player chaos, appoint two logistics players who stay near the active puzzle instead of wandering for vistas.

Silent players can still be packers — laser pointers and flares need hands more than voices. Pair this with Gestures & Arms when voice is muted.

Where bags spawn — blue buildings

Backpacks and waist bags live inside circular blue buildings scattered across the island. On the unlocked 3D map they appear as blue dots with a rectangular block attached. Outside, the structures look multi-tiered; inside you usually find a single floor and one bag — except one southern building that holds both a backpack and a waist bag.

Community maps count roughly ten blue buildings. Exact colors and bag types vary by building (orange, light blue, green, purple, yellow, teal, pink, red…). One purple waist bag sits behind a doorway unlocked along a tunnel path after Yellow Tower progress. The southernmost double-drop is easier after Green Tower powers the ski lift toward the southeast.

Do not treat this wiki as a GPS pin list for every doorway. Part of Big Walk’s fun is spotting the blue silhouette from a ridge with binoculars — Landmarks. Use the Red Tower map markers to track which buildings you have already looted.

Early backpack tip

From the Red Tower roof, grab binoculars and look downhill for a blue building. That early backpack is the fastest way to stop juggling tools during your first gourd hunt. Completing Red also marks remaining blue structures on the big map — another reason Red belongs first in Tower Order.

Dual-gourd holster near Green

Near the Green Tower forest, under a glowing balloon, players can find a holster that holds two red collectibles — either on your person or attached to a backpack. It is not a full second backpack, but it halves trips when a tower still needs five gourds. Grab it the same session you unlock the ski lift if you can.

Session habits that prevent inventory fights

  1. Loot bags early before splitting for challenges.
  2. Name who carries what — “Sam has walkie, Alex has flare pack.”
  3. Never leave the only backpack at camp when the puzzle needs a ferry.
  4. Park a packer at junctions so runners can swap without everyone stopping.
  5. Remember host saves — discovered world state follows the host; guests should not assume their personal bag layout persists on another save — Host Saves.

Large parties should duplicate walkie-talkies and flares across subgroups instead of stuffing every rare bag onto one person who then falls into a cave alone.

Big Pack and achievement hunting

Players chasing the Big Pack style achievement need to locate backpacks across multiple blue buildings rather than camping the first orange pack forever. Share bags so every teammate can wear one during a photo-op session, then return to puzzle loadouts. Achievements never justify stranding the host’s gourd run — finish the tower night, then do the fashion parade.

Crossplay and control notes

Steam mouse users often make faster item handoffs; DualSense and Switch 2 players may prefer being the carrier while a PC friend packs. Confirm bindings in PC Controls and Console Controls if grab/interact feels wrong after a patch.

Join Code lobbies should settle packer roles in the staging area before anyone sprints toward a blue roof — Join Codes Hub.

How bags fit the tool ecosystem

Bags do not replace communication toys; they transport them:

  • Walkie-talkies and megaphones for voice range — Walkie-Talkie, Signaling Tools
  • Binoculars and laser pointers for scouting
  • Whiteboards for silent plans
  • Red gourds for tower deliveries

When inventory is tight, consult the Tools Tier List before abandoning the cowbell forever.

Master the buddy-equip rule early and Big Walk’s “why can’t I open my own bag?” moment becomes a running joke instead of a session-killer.
