Tips & Tricks

Big Walk rewards patience, clear callouts, and a little logistics. It punishes twelve people sprinting in twelve directions with zero flares. These tips collect the habits that show up again and again in post-launch guides, reviews, and exhausted-but-happy lobby chats — without spoiling named puzzle solutions.

New installers should still start at Getting Started. Use this page as the sticky note you paste in Discord before the first session, then mute Discord and play with Proximity Chat.

Tip 1 — Stay on in-game voice

House House built challenges around muffled walls, distance falloff, and speechless rooms. External party chat removes the joke and sometimes the difficulty. Keep Discord for scheduling; keep Big Walk voice for hiking. If voices feel too quiet even when close, that is a known launch bug — see Known Issues and temporarily raise headset volume carefully.

Tip 2 — Finish Red Tower early

The Red Tower unlocks the 3D map that marks towers, landmarks, blue backpack buildings, and collected gourds. Wandering is fun; wandering without the map for three hours is a different hobby. Recommended sequence and unlocks: Best Tower Order.

Tip 3 — Grab backpacks from blue buildings

Circular blue buildings hold backpacks and waist bags. You cannot equip your own pack — a friend dresses you. Loot an early backpack after Red, then share bags so scouts are not juggling every tool. Details: Backpacks & Bags.

Tip 4 — Bright character colors

Pick high-contrast outfits. Fog, forests, and twelve similar silhouettes make “where are you?” twice as hard. Agree on color callouts (“teal backpack near the sundial”) instead of vague pointing.

Tip 5 — Role triad: scout, anchor, packer

  • Scout — binoculars + walkie, describes without solving alone
  • Anchor — stays at levers/gates, repeats info before acting
  • Packer — manages bags and gourd handoffs

Rotate roles every challenge so one friend does not become unpaid tour guide. Deeper puzzle habits: Challenges & Puzzles.

Tip 6 — One walkie and one regroup tool per subgroup

When you split, every pod needs long-range voice and a visible beacon. Flares beat shouting across fog. Megaphones help six-plus lobbies. Laser pointers mark without spoiling audio puzzles. Loadout tables: Signaling Tools and Party Prep Planner.

Tip 7 — Count downs have one caller

Sync gates fail when three people count from three at different tempos. Appoint one caller. Add a tiny pause for crossplay latency between Steam, PS5, and Switch 2.

Tip 8 — Screenshot the host’s name

Progress lives on the host save. Guests who rotate hosts fragment the campaign. Capture the host’s platform name before you log off — Host Saves Explained.

Tip 9 — Use the ski lift as a ferry, not only a ride

After Green Tower, the ski lift moves people and gourds across mountains. Station callers on the line; ground teams meet at agreed stops. Unlock priority notes live on Tower Order.

Tip 10 — Plan the PEAK bundle only if you want both games

On Steam, Big Walk launched with a limited 25% introductory discount and a Big Walk + PEAK bundle (extra bundle cut on top of individual sales). Buy the bundle only if your group also wants PEAK; otherwise claim PS Plus Essential on PS5 during the Aug 4–Sep 1, 2026 window if eligible — PS Plus & Price.

Tip 11 — The island is Wilsons Prom-inspired bush, not a loot desert

House House based the landscape on Wilsons Promontory vibes from south-east Australia. Expect naturalistic trails, bright playground structures as landmarks, and a real ending — not endless extraction loops. Navigation without a minimap is intentional — Map Hub.

Tip 12 — End sessions before fatigue

Co-op puzzle patience collapses after midnight. Stop after a tower unlock or a funny failure, not after the fifth identical lever wipe. Schedule the same host for next time.

Quick pre-hike checklist

  1. Platforms confirmed (Steam / PS5 / Switch 2) and Join Codes ready — Crossplay
  2. Host designated and announced
  3. Mics tested in-game for ten seconds
  4. Red Tower map status known
  5. At least one backpack looted for the active subgroup
  6. Flare + walkie assigned before first split
  7. Gesture meanings agreed (point = look, both arms = wait/help)

Keep the tips light, keep the flares ready, and remember the goal is a shared story — not a speedrun leaderboard.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Big Walk questions.

What is the single best tip for new Big Walk players?

Use in-game proximity voice, finish the Red Tower map early, and assign scout/anchor/packer roles before you split up.

Should we use Discord during puzzles?

Prefer in-game voice. Discord is fine for scheduling, but it bypasses distance-based puzzle design.

Which tower should we complete first?

Red Tower first for the 3D map, then usually Green for the ski lift. See the Tower Order guide for full rationale.

Why can’t I open my own backpack?

Inventory is cooperative by design — teammates equip and access bags. Read the Backpacks guide for locations and habits.

Voices are too quiet even nearby — is that normal?

Proximity falloff is normal at distance, but launch builds had a bug making close voices too quiet. Check Known Issues for House House’s status.
