Shiny & Big Makeover Guide

Mild route spoilers for a secret cosmetic studio. Shiny is not required for Big Goodbye. It unlocks the Big Makeover achievement and metallic paint options.

This guide covers prerequisites, the common tunnel path, and the co-op paint rule. Pair with Yellow Tower & Tunnel, Achievements, and Endings if you are juggling cleanup nights.

What “Shiny” actually is

Shiny refers to a hidden paintbrush / metallic palette tucked in the underground network. The studio offers metallic colors (commonly described as bronze / silver / gold style finishes) that normal trail paint stations do not provide. Applying metallic paint to at least part of a character — with a friend’s help — unlocks Big Makeover.

Like backpacks, painting is social: you generally cannot finish the makeover alone.

Prerequisite: Yellow Tower tunnels

  1. Complete Yellow Tower so the underground tunnel network is open.
  2. Bring a light / flashlight — tunnels are pitch dark.
  3. Prefer unlocking Green’s chairlift first so the Yellow approach is not a misery hike.

If Yellow is still locked, no amount of Blue sightseeing opens the Shiny studio.

Common route summary (spoiler-light landmarks)

Community guides describe more than one valid tunnel path. A widely used sequence:

  1. Enter tunnels via a convenient access near Blue or from the Yellow tunnel mouth (both appear in verified writeups — pick the entrance your save already opened).
  2. Grab the torch / light near the entrance if you did not bring one.
  3. Follow floor tower markers (green / blue direction cues) rather than random side shafts.
  4. When markers conflict, take the right-hand corridor called out by most Blue-start routes, then drop to a lower level when the path opens.
  5. Continue through color-coded tunnel segments (red / green / purple zones appear in route notes).
  6. Cross a bridge into a purple-adjacent structure area.
  7. Descend ramps / drops until you find a second paint station with metallic swatches and the special brush.

If the metallic studio never appears, you skipped a marker fork — return to the last torch / green marker and retry the right-hand branch instead of inventing a new mountain entrance.

Polygon-style Yellow-entrance routes also work: enter Yellow’s tunnel, take an early right with a light, pass club-like rooms, then commit to the red/green fork that descends into the purple paint hollow. Use whichever entrance matches your unlocked transport.

Unlock Big Makeover correctly

  1. Reach the hidden metallic palette with two players.
  2. One player uses the Shiny brush / metallic blocks to paint the other.
  3. Confirm at least one body part receives a metallic color.
  4. Swap roles so every friend who wants the trophy gets painted.

Standing in the room without a paint handoff usually fails the achievement. Normal surface paint stations elsewhere on the island do not grant Big Makeover.

Keep Shiny on a side-evening after tunnels exist. Do not abandon Black Tower night to hunt paint unless the lobby voted for fashion.

Session tips

  • Assign a light carrier and a navigator before entering.
  • Use walkies if the group splits at forks — Walkie-Talkie.
  • Screenshot the host name; only their save keeps tunnel progress — Host Saves.
  • After makeovers, return to Purple Puzzles or Endings if 100% is still the goal.

Shiny is Big Walk at its most House House: a ridiculous underground salon hidden behind serious co-op routing. Unlock Yellow, bring a friend and a light, and leave the ridge looking ridiculous on purpose.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Big Walk questions.

How do I unlock Shiny?

Open the underground tunnels by finishing Yellow Tower, then follow a marked tunnel route to the hidden metallic paint studio.

Does Shiny unlock Big Makeover?

Yes. Have a partner paint you with the metallic palette; solo standing in the room is not enough.

Is Shiny required to finish the game?

No. It is optional for Big Goodbye and Big Game. It is required only for the Big Makeover achievement and metallic colors.

Why can’t I find the studio?

Confirm Yellow tunnels are open, carry a light, and backtrack to the last floor marker fork — most missed routes skip a right-hand drop.

Can I use normal paint stations for Makeover?

No. Big Makeover needs the hidden metallic studio unlocked through the tunnel route.
